Commemoration ceremonies

In 1977, the terrorism of the so-called Red Army Faction posed an existential challenge to the constitutional democracy of the then West Germany. In that year the abduction and murder of Hanns Martin Schleyer and those charged with protecting him led to the establishment of the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation. The warning sounded by this attack and the obligations it created are today more relevant than ever. If we are to be able to continue to live in freedom and prosperity, policymakers, business leaders and civil society must be willing to commit themselves to actively defending the liberal democracy anchored in our constitution. The activities of the Foundation are primarily aimed at creating dialogue with young graduates and thus raising awareness among the younger generation of the principles upon which our liberal democratic polity and socially responsible free-market economy in Germany and Europe are founded.
