Vth Interdisciplinary Congress on YOUNG SCIENCE AND PRACTICE

Quality and Efficiency: A Contradiction in Terms? –
On the future of medical excellence in economically challenging times

in cooperation with Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung
together with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

Given the geopolitical, ecological and economic challenges and the increasing scarcity of resources our society is facing, it is essential that those responsible for the fields of health care and medical research take a long hard look at the future of medicine in Germany. With investment urgently needed in climate protection and the energy transition, the health sector is competing with the rest of the economy not only for skilled workers but also for the very funds needed to finance research and teaching. Against this background, what can be done to guarantee high quality standards in the future? What potential support do digitalisation and innovations in medical technology have to offer?

In close collaboration with the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation will be addressing precisely these questions at the Vth Interdisciplinary Congress on YOUNG SCIENCE AND PRACTICE. Under the title, “Quality and Efficiency: A Contradiction in Terms? – On the future of medical excellence in economically challenging times”, the congress will shed light on the interplay between the individuals and institutions concerned with these issues in science, politics and civil society.

The Scientific Director of the Congress is Prof. Dr. Heyo Kroemer, Chairman of the Board of Charité, and Federal Minister of Health Prof. Karl Wilhelm Lauterbach and Prof. Ran Balicer, Chief Innovation Officer at Clalit Health Services in Tel Aviv, are among those who have already confirmed their participation. The audience will include not only representatives from the fields of medicine, health care, business and the media but also more than 100 young researchers from Germany and other European countries who have been invited to participate on the recommendation of their university professors. All are involved in research into how, despite dramatic changes in our demography, efficient structures can be created in the health care system to ensure the maintenance of the highest quality standards.

In the working groups, this new generation of researchers will be given the opportunity to present their innovative ideas and research approaches in short lectures and to discuss their research results with experienced practitioners, university professors and scientists.

The Congress is part of a series which since its inception in 2003 has developed into a widely recognised platform for debate on topics of immediate relevance for our society.
